The Guardian

Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher star in THE GUARDIAN, the powerful, action-packed drama that takes you inside the never-before-seen world of the elite Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers. Reeling with grief in the wake of a mission gone tragically wrong, legendary Rescue Swimmer Ben Randall (Costner) is given a mission he doesn’t want — training raw recruits. Once there, he knocks heads with cocky Jake Fischer (Kutcher), a swimming champ driven by a painful secret, who’s more interested in breaking Ben’s records than saving lives. But Ben also sees Jake has what it takes to be the best of the best. Filled with spectacular rescues in the lethal waters of the Bering Sea, THE GUARDIAN is a riveting and compelling story that dives straight into the heart and soul of real heroes, the unsung guardians of the sea.

The Guardian offers satisfying entertainment with a no-nonsense combination of Hollywood formula and good old-fashioned star power. While honoring the men and women who serve as rescue swimmers for the U.S. Coast Guard, this predictable yet appealing drama is a well-crafted showcase for Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher, who bring welcome depth and dimension to their formulaic roles. It’s basically Top Gun for the Coast Guard, with Costner playing a legendary rescuer haunted by recent tragedy and the impending break-up of his marriage, and Kutcher as the hot-shot recruit whose bravado is tested when Costner takes over a grueling 18-week basic training course, where a 50% attrition rate ensures that only the best will make the grade. There’s nothing particularly inventive about Ron L. Brinkerhoff’s screenplay, but it’s intelligently written and well-directed (by The Fugitive helmer Andrew Davis) as it shows how seasoned veteran and troubled but talented trainee build mutual respect while sorting through the trauma of accidents that left each of them as sole survivors, tormented by self-doubt and guilt.

Bolstered by a strong supporting cast including Neal McDonough, John Heard, Sela Ward and Clancy Brown, The Guardian is a bit on the long side (137 minutes), but it never feels slow, and a romantic subplot (with Kutcher wooing a schoolteacher played by Melissa Sagemiller) blends nicely with thrilling ocean-rescue sequences incorporating a seamless blend of CGI and footage shot in a 750,000-gallon water tank. Music fans will welcome the scene-stealing appearance of veteran singer Bonnie Bramlett as the owner of a jazz/blues club near the training base, where The Guardian serves up yet another staple of its genre: the barroom brawl. Although Hurricane Katrina prevented The Guardian from being filmed in New Orleans in 2005, real-life footage during the closing credits makes it clear that the Coast Guard was essential in Katrina’s aftermath, and this rousing drama pays overdue tribute to those who risk there lives (to quote the Coast Guard’s motto) “so that others may live.” –Jeff Shannon

As others have doubtlessly pointed out, there are some genuine parallels between the present movie and the 1980s Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector’s Edition). Like TG, it is about a grizzled veteran (portrayed by Kevin Costner) who is attempting to teach a young hot-shot (Ashton Kutcher) (in TG it was Tom Skeritt & Tom Cruise in these roles). There is the ubiquitous babe-in-the-bar-bet (this time played by Melissa Sagemiller; Kelly McGillis in TG). And, of course, there are the haunting flashbacks to a disaster.

That said, anyone who wishes to write this movie off as nothing more than the Coast Guard’s version of TOP GUN would be sorely mistaken. This is a great movie in its own right, and the comparisons to the landmark Navy aviation flick should only be peripheral. In short, this is a terrific story that both intrigues the viewer as well as demonstrates the awe inspiring professionalism of the United States Coast Guard.

Unlike TG, this is a movie that’s much more about the instructor (Costner) than it is the student. Afraid that he is on the verge of being washed up, a legendary Senior Chief takes a temporary assignment to teach a new generation of rescue swimmers. Among them is a Michael Phelps like swimmer (Kutcher) who has all the physical tools but needs to be shown the ropes of the craft.

Having watched Deadliest Catch – Seasons 1, 2, & 3 on the HISTORY Channel, I could tell that there was a remarkable degree of authenticity to the procedures / terminology / operations of the Coast Guard as they were depicted in this film. The end credits showed what I had suspected, which was that there was a great deal of collaboration with the Coast Guard during the making of this film. Some real-live USCG swimmers were even extras in the film!

The motto of the Coast Guard is “So others may live.” This is precisely the same motto used by the brave Air Force parajumpers who go behind enemy lines to rescue downed pilots. This is a truly fabulous movie that is family friendly and pays homage to the gallant sailors, airmen & swimmers who are in the Coast Guard & uphold this motto as a sacred trust. This film honors the USCG in the same way that Ladder 49 (Widescreen Edition) honors firefighters. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough!

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail (Fullscreen Edition)

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail (Fullscreen Edition)

After a high-speed freeway chase puts Madea (TYLER PERRY) in front of the judge, her reprieve is short-lived as anger management issues get the best of her and land her in jail. A gleeful Joe (TYLER PERRY) couldn’t be happier at Madea’s misfortune. But Madea’s eccentric family members, the Browns (DAVID and TAMELA MANN), rally behind her, lending their special “country” brand of support. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway (DEREK LUKE) is on the fast track to career success. But Hardaway lands a case too personal to handle – defending young prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington (KESHIA KNIGHT PULLIAM) – and asks his fiancée and fellow Assistant District Attorney Linda Holmes (ION OVERMAN) to fill in on his behalf. When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman, protecting her in a “motherly” way as only Madea can.

Tyler Perry puts “the shut to the up” to his critics. Madea Goes to Jail is the fourth of his seven films to open at No. 1 at the box office. Even tween faves the Jonas Brothers and their 3-D Concert Experience were no match for Perry and his indomitable Madea, the straight-shooting, Glock-wielding grandma who put him on the map. A prolific playwright, Perry is a consummate showman who knows his audience, and Jail delivers what they expect from him: soul-stirring melodrama, boisterous physical comedy, and inspirational faith-based uplift. What it could use is more Madea, whose name is in the title, but who takes a backseat to another one of Perry’s mis-matched couples; Joshua (Derek Luke), a good-hearted up-from-the-ghetto assistant prosecutor, and Linda (Ion Overman) a lawyer and upwardly-mobile “princess,” who becomes threatened when Joshua is reunited with Candy, a childhood friend turned strung-out prostitute (Omigod, it’s Rudy from The Cosby Show!) Madea makes the most of her limited screen time. Whether scattering unwanted guests from her house, turning the tables on a woman who stole her parking space, or even leaving Dr. Phil at a loss for words, Madea brings it in all her rabble-rousing glory. She doesn’t actually go to jail until the film is well under way, but it’s worth the wait as she protects the incarcerated Candy from the jail’s strapping gang leader. Madea Goes to Jail little resembles the play upon which it is based (also available on DVD), but it comes to the screen audience-tested. Perry is not a flashy film director, but his reliance on close-ups is Tyler-made for the small screen. It is a testament to Perry’s newfound Hollywood clout that he can attract an actor of Luke’s caliber, as well as cameos from Judge Mathis and members of The View. He may joke in interviews about wanting to kill off Madea, but his and her fans needn’t worry. As a judge remarks about Madea early on in Jail, “She’ll be back. She couldn’t stay out of trouble if she tried.” –Donald Liebenson

Tyler Perry is back with Madea finally getting her due, or does she? With her same bodacious personality, Madea and Joe never miss a beat. This movie is funny with some thought provoking moments. Also, see another side of the Cosby kid. Thanks Tyler, entertaining as always.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete [Blu-ray]

Continuing the storyline based on the hit Playstation® game Final Fantasy VII, two years have passed since the ruins of Midgar stand as a testament to the sacrifices made in order to bring peace. However, the world will soon face a new menace. A mysterious illness is spreading fast. Old enemies are astir. And Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again . . .

The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it’s based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud’s former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. –Paul Gaita

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Limted Edition Collector’s Set)

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children(Limted Edition Collector’s Set) includes:
• Theatrical Trailers • Bonus Script • Bonus Book • Bonus Postcards

The original Advent Children was a breakthrough in CGI and motion-capture technology, beautifully rendered and impressive in its scope. Now, with the film “Complete”, with a half-hour of brand-new scenes that all easily avoid the original’s “uncanny valley” effect.

Fans of the original Final Fantasy VII game will find “Advent Children Complete” the perfect addition to the ever-growing “Compilation of Final Fantasy VII” library. Those who aren’t fans may find the first half-hour a bit boring before the action picks up and the story moves quickly. Still, the film is a worthy addition to any Blu-ray fan’s library. It has also come to be known by me as the “Holy Grail of Blu-rays”, for one distinct reason: this is my original motivation for picking up a PlayStation 3, and it made it all worth it.

What else can I say? Buy it, watch it over and over, fan or not. It is worth any price you pay.

The Good Witch

Catherine Bell (BRUCE ALMIGHTY, ARMY WIVES) stars in this rousing and mysterious family film about a woman who moves into a haunted mansion, causing the surrounding townspeople to speculate whether she’s a witch–or possibly even the fabled “Grey Lady.”

The movie is excellent but I hesitated ordering because the details showed the movie is distributed by Good Times Video and I have had some “hit & miss” quality issues with past purchases. This video is actually distributed by Gaiam Video and the transfer quality is crystal clear. The movie is great, the price is right, the quality is superior, so set back and enjoy.

The Damned United

From the Academy Award-nominated writer of The Queen and Frost/Nixon, The Damned United is based on the incredible true story of Brian Clough, one of England’s greatest soccer managers and his 44 controversial days at the helm of reigning champs Leeds United. Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Twilight Saga: New Moon) triumphs as Clough starring alongside a winning ensemble cast that includes Timothy Spall (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Colm Meaney (Layer Cake) and Jim Broadbent (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). This inspiring and humorous sports drama is about the power of friendship in the face of adversity and the stubborn will of one man to play by his own rules.

You don’t have to like football (or soccer, as we call it in the U.S.) to enjoy The Damned United, because this sharp, funny movie isn’t about sports any more than Citizen Kane is about running a newspaper. The Damned United is about ego–specifically, the large and driven ego of Brian Clough (Michael Sheen), the manager of a low-rung football team who, along with his assistant Peter Taylor (the always superb Timothy Spall, Secrets & Lies), brought his team to the top rank. At which point Clough self-destructed, even as he seemed to be given the keys to even greater heights: he was hired as the new manager of Leeds United, perhaps the strongest team in England, replacing his longtime rival Don Revie (Colm Meaney, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). The Damned United bounces back and forth in time, deftly laying out Clough’s rise and fall, transforming a man who initially seems an unbearable, domineering jerk into someone you feel for deeply. After Frost/Nixon and The Queen, Sheen practically specializes in playing real people, but his performance here is utterly stellar, by turns brilliantly comic and subtly moving. The movie lets the relationship between Clough and Taylor unspool organically, until the love and anger between them starts to fray and collapse. This is a riveting and ultimately invigorating story, psychologically compelling and with more twists and turns than a crime thriller. Simply a great movie. –Bret Fetzer

Stills from The Damned United (Click for larger image)

A compelling rewarding movie, destined to become a classic.

The book The Damned Utd which anyone should read that finds this movie interesting along with a number of others on the subject uses a lot of creative license as well but the big difference is that in this movie, Clough is basically a hero as well as being the sport icon he was in the seventies. In the book and surely there is some truth to it since Clough surely suffered from alcoholism in his life, Clough somewhat self-destructs especially in the second half of the book.

First off, we need to remember that the movie and the book “The Damned United” are both works of fiction, the movie loosely based on the book and the book loosely based on the truth and to go one further, there also exists an additional book We Are the Damned United: The Real Story of Brian Clough at Leeds United, as indicated an indeed realistic portrayal of Clough’s brief rule at Leeds United. This movie though seems to reach out at portraying much of the essence of the story of the ‘Damned United’ and scores points for doing so. Clough wanted a clean, talented and honest soccer game, he in fact, discouraged his players from lively ‘hotdog’ types of celebrations in real life as just one example of his coaching. Clough’s philosophy towards the game can be analyzed in some of his famous quotes such as upon arriving at Leeds, he told the players “You can all throw your medals in the bin because they were not won fairly” used in the movie.

What I do enjoy in the movie is that in the book whereas some essentials might become lost or obscured was how in fact, Cloughie’s success truly was in large part to his co-partnership in managment with Peter Taylor, a teammate of Clough going back to his playing days in Sunderland and/or Middlesbrough, Taylor who was a goalkeeper sounded out Clough way back then on ideas and would say things to him to give him confidence. Another famous quote by BC was his saying and yes, it is in the movie, “I wouldn’t say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one.” Now, what does this mean? To me, it dawned on me that he probably means that he was “in the top one” in being mindful of his collaboration with Peter Taylor, the two of them as one. Events did not exactly transpire as indicated in the movie but the depiction is nonetheless, basically accurate in the ‘big picture’ of how things were.

The story goes on from here as books on Brian Clough are now a virtual cottage industry with even a sub-category of the ol’ Leeds team as well, Leeds, traditional enemy of the Monarchy in English history as well of all things I’ve heard. One should probably start out with Provided You Don’t Kiss Me: 20 Years with Brian Clough as required reading on Clough, penned by the journalist Duncan Hamilton who spent close to 20 years with the ‘Gaffer’ (manager, coach) at the Nottingham Forest club and was the William Hill sport book of the year. Questions some viewers have about this movie are answered in the books which though I have gone on about and this is the movie, the books give us an idea of whether we are seeing a truthful representation. There are also a number of videos around one can watch of the actual interviews presented in this movie. Brian Clough surely had his downside as well but for the most part, in this movie, he is a hero and it’s a fair place to start studying the man. In light of the recent incident so well reported on over the past week involving the mishap with the Wales and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, something you might not know if you only see the movie is that in fact, around 1959, Brian Clough’s brilliant career as a player came to an end as the result of his leg being broken. He does allude to his career in the movie by stating something like “I scored 251 goals in 274 games”, a phenomenal record. His being denied a further career as a player and it coming to such a sudden end, probably added an impetus to him to coach as well as he did. Yes, he was probably “the best manager England never had” but being as outspoken as he was, he also enjoyed a sprite career as a TV pundit while still managing and Clough derided the then-manager for England, Sir Alf Ramsey, criticisms Clough later felt some regrets over making when England were eventually eliminated from making the 1974 World Cup and Sir Alf Ramsey was dismissed. That’s why that although Clough is a coaching legend and often highly likeable, there’s definitely 2 sides to the story and at times, he could be a polarizing figure, as reflected also during his tenure at Leeds and as the reason for his departure from Derby County and not being selected as manager for the England team. Sir Alf Ramsey by the way, was in charge of England’s triumph in 1966. Still, polarizing or not, to be a manager anywhere, you are bound to encounter difficulties, if it be in Bob Bradley’s position with the USA National soccer team or any other.

Of course, anyone who sees the movie ‘Queen’ is probably struck by Michael Sheen’s close resemblance to Tony Blair, so I was skeptical at first on how well he could do Brian Clough. After reading about Clough in a number of books and magazines and watching actual video footage of the man, Sheen does in fact, do a convincing job. The cinematography additionally is quite fantastic in this movie. “Goal”, “A shot at glory” and “(Escape to) Victory” may have a bit more soccer action but this movie has the action combined with the managerial duties of Taylor and Clough and that makes this a real winner.

The extra features are outstanding and tell one a lot more about this movie including a segment giving a contrarian view of Leeds United versus being the dirty team that they are portrayed to be in the view of Brian Clough. It is worth evaluating to be even-handed in viewing these past events because, yes, this is a point of debate even until today. I’d give it additional high marks for authenticity, the special features point out the stadium used in the movie is from Chesterfield who still retain the same old time stadium with terraces at least for now, add in a pouring rain at some of the matches as one can still see at a number of Premier League games being played nowadays and the setting is very realistic. The only thing I wonder about is if the gold of the Derby County Team would have seen their original stadium painted in the green color scheme (the name of the original stadium the Derby County Rams played in was called of all the things, the Baseball Grounds).

The Burning Bed

No Description Available.
Genre: Feature Film-Drama
Rating: NR
Release Date: 7-SEP-2004
Media Type: DVD

This controversial, 1984 made-for-television movie gave Farrah Fawcett her first true showcase as an actress. Playing an abused wife who kills her monstrous husband (Paul Le Mat), Fawcett demonstrates a facility with the moral ambiguities of the story, which concerns the painful but fascinating questions of where justice lies. Fine support from Richard Masur and Grace Zabriskie, and the assured direction is by Robert Greenwald (Xanadu. –Tom Keogh

One of the greatest TV movies ever made, Farrah Fawcett proved she was an excellent actress that could do more than just be a pretty face from her days on “Charlie’s Anegels”. I remember vividly when this movie made its debut on NBC in the fall of 1984. The network spent thousands promoting the film both in print and on the airwaves as the film became a must see event. “The Burning Bed” was based on a nonfiction novel written by Faith McNulty about a Michigan housewife and mother who is battered both physically and mentally by her husband for years. Finally one night after having too many beatings she sends her children to the car and sets her husband ablaze while he is sleeping. She eventually goes to the police and confesses what she did. The film is heartbreaking, well-acted, emotional, and most of all extremely graphic in its depiction of family violence. Farrah Fawcett actually suffered bruises from filming the physical abuse scenes. Paul LeMat plays the husband superbly and as a viewer you want his character to pay for the harm he has inflicted upon his wife. “The Burning Bed” went on to enjoy the highest ratings for any TV movie of the 1980’s and is widely used in college classrooms as a tool in educating students on domestic abuse. Farrah Fawcett also recieved an Emmy Award nomination for Best Actress in a movie made for TV, but unfortunately lost.
