Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)

(Horror) A fun zombie film that busts at the seams with gross special effects, amazing action, and deliciously over-the-top moments, as gun-legged Cherry Darling and one man wrecking crew El Wray try to save the world from a horde of flesh-eating zombies.

Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the ’60s and early ’70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is a rollicking horror/sci-fi/action piece about a plague outbreak that turns citizens into cannibalistic murderers; it’s heavy on the gore and explosions but also features a terrific cast of A players (Freddy Rodriguez, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton) and B-movie vets (Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Tom Savini) and the indelible image of Rose McGowan as a stripper whose torn-off leg is replaced by a high-powered machine gun.

If Tarantino’s feature was a nod to the moody, genre-jumping exploitation of the early ’70s, Rodriguez’s contribution to the Grindhouse aesthetic pays tribute to the manic gorefests from Italy and the States in the early ’80s. And much like the film itself, the supplemental features on Terror’s double-disc Extended and Unrated presentation have a loose, action-packed and familial vibe that gives fans full access to Rodriguez’s one-man-studio approach to moviemaking. The director is featured twice on audio tracks: first, on the feature commentary, which provides a fun tour through the picture’s production (as well as information on the upcoming Grindhouse DVD set, which will reunite the two pictures in their theatrical format), and later on the “10-Minute Film School,” a fascinating breakneck run through the numerous visual and CGI effects that produced the film’s most eye-popping effects, including McGowan’s leg/machine gun. Most of the extras echo Rodriguez’s informative and entertaining vibe–two featurettes cover the picture’s male and female cast (the former offers affectionate tributes to the exploitation vets in the company, including Biehn, Fahey, Michael Parks, and Savini), while “Casting Rebel” is an amusing discussion of how Rodriguez came to bring his own son into the movie, as well as his refusal to disclose the fate of Rebel’s character. “Sickos, Bullets, and Explosions” takes a look at Terror’s extensive special effects through interviews with stunt coordinator Jeff Dashnaw and members of the visual effects team, while “The Friend, The Doctor, and The Real Estate Agent” chats with three non-actors, all pals of Rodriguez, who wound up with small but significant roles in the picture. The Extended and Unrated aspect of the set is limited to a few extended scenes and extra splatter (sorry, the infamous “Missing Reel” is not recovered for this set), while Grindhouse fans bemoaning the absence of the film’s hilarious faux trailers will appreciate the inclusion of Rodriguez’s hilarious Machete spot, with Danny Trejo as a death-dealing, lady-loving tough guy gunning for double-crosser Fahey. The set also includes an “Audience Reaction” track: Essentially, it’s a whole track of whoops and hollers that allows the viewer to “experience” the film as if they were watching it in an actual grindhouse from back in the day. Its inclusion neither adds to or detracts from enjoying this DVD, but it’s wholly indicative of the level of fun Rodriguez had making the picture–and wants to share with his fans. – Paul Gaita

PLANET TERROR is a grand tribute to all things drive-in, 70s, and exploitive! Chemically-generated zombies begin slaughtering and eating their way through humanity. It’s up to a tow-truck driver (Freddy Rodriguez), a sheriff (Michael Beihn from THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, and THE ABYSS), a go-go dancer (Rose Mcgowan from DEVIL IN THE FLESH), and a small band of survivors to battle the flesh-rending horde, as well as a military outfit headed by an eeevil Bruce Willis! Of course, Ms. Mcgowan is the stand-out w/ her amputated-limb-turned-instrument-of-death! She thwacks, stabs, and guns down all opposition w/ her trusty “dis-ability”! Robert Rodriguez (FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, SIN CITY) just keeps getting better at this stuff…

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray]

No Description Available.
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: PG
Release Date: 13-NOV-2007
Media Type: Blu-Ray

Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers–or anybody who’s too young to remember The Goodbye Girl–may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss’s performance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the “chosen”) is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil’s Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue, Close Encounters now seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner “call.” Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary, Close Encounters comes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial. –Miles Bethany

without a doubt has to be 1 of my top 10 movies of all time ! i have always been a fan of sci-fi but this is(IMHO) one of the best & MOST PLAUSIBLE UFO movies ever made. the acting from Richard Dreyfuss down to little Barry are all spot on for this type of movie and the effects still rock after all this time!

the famous music had to rank right up there with Jaws, Star Wars – once you hear those 5 single notes you know that you are watching a classic

i don’t understand the complaints about the audio & video quality of the BD – i am watching it on a 60″ Sony LED through a Yamaha receiver and an OPPO blu-ray player and think it is just gorgeous!

C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete Ninth Season

Crime drama from the perspective of a Las Vegas forensic team.

Stills from CSI: Season Nine (Click for larger image)

I’ve followed CSI ever since the pilot episode. Now nearly 11 years later, the show is still true to form and still as popular as it was when the show debuted on CBS. I’ll admit, I didn’t watch CSI the first four years it was on. It was only after I rented the DVDs from Netflix that I got hooked. I watched the first three seasons on DVD in under three weeks. I’d get a disc, watch it and send it back the same day I got it.

When the characters in the show started leaving for various reasons, I was afraid the show would ‘jump the shark.’ I was skeptical about the addition of Laurence Fishburne taking over the role of the departed Gil Grissom, but I was pleasantly surprised when he seemed to gel quickly with the veteran characters on the show.

I missed a lot of the 9th season due to different reasons so when I bought this a couple weeks ago, this was another instance of watching all the discs in one weekend and it reaffirmed to me that this show is still on top of it’s game. Most shows over the years deviate from their roots. CSI has stayed true to their roots they planted in the first season and leading up until now. Fantastic show with fantastic storylines (albiet a bit unreal at times – my brother is a real life CSI and watches this show so he ‘knows how the public thinks crimes are solved’) with amazing actors.

My Family

Three-generational epic saga of the Sanchez family as told by the eldest son.

Even though I just finished watching this movie five minutes ago, it was so moving that I had to write a review ASAP.The story is a timeline piece about a Mexican-American family in California. It starts off with the story of the parents, then their children.

What I really liked about this film is that it was very emotional. In the beginning of the film, which starts of in the 1930’s, the mother (played by Jennifer Lopez) is unlawfully sent back to Mexico as an illegal alien. She is actually an American but because of the political/racial situtions during that time, she is not given justice.

She lives with an elderly aunt and vows to travel by foot thousands of miles away to go back to California to be reunited with her husband and two other children. The story could stop there but it doesn’t. The film gets really good as we watch the mother walk through deserts, rainy fields, and then almost drowns in a raging river while looking for her baby which has floated away. I’ve never seen such a struggle of survival displayed on screen like that. Imagine a woman swimming in water while looking for a her baby who may or may not have drowned.Thankfully the baby turns up.

Next we switch to a scene where six elderly Mexican shaman women, situated in surrounded in a dark room filled with candles and pictures of the Virgin Mary, praying over the baby and asking the Spirit of the raging river not to take his life. The mother sits to the side crying and praying for God to spare her child.

Of course much more happens in the film but it’s so deep I can’t go into detail. Maybe I might write another review later, but I had to express some words about the film now.I’m so glad I saw it and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Exhale: Core Fusion Lean & Toned

“A solid total-body toner” –USA Today
“Thorough, core-busting workouts” –More.com
“Delivers results in a short period of time” –Los Angeles Times
“The perfect fusion of fitness and fun” –American Spa magazine

You can tailor your practice to time constraints, or do them all together for an invigorating total-body workout.

Bringing the mind/body spa experience home, Elisabeth and Fred teach Lean & Toned like one of exhale’s nationally renowned Core Fusion classes. Subtle but intense moves increase your heart rate, helping you burn calories and lose weight as you tone. Soon you’ll have flat abs, firm glutes, chiseled arms, and slender legs. And since the unique Core Fusion approach mixes stretching and sculpting moves, your newly defined muscles will be long and lean. Reshape your body, and enjoy the workout the celebs are raving about! Includes 5 min. bonus stretch.

Husband and wife team and Core Fusion co-creators Fred DeVito and Elisabeth Halfpapp have over 50 years of combined experience teaching Pilates, Lotte Berk Method, yoga, and dance–disciplines that comprise the Lean & Toned workout. They are founding team members of exhale, a leading mind/body spa with locations in the U.S. and the Caribbean.

I own all of the Exhale Core Fusion DVDs and I also take the live classes at Exhale Spa. I continue to be amazed by how Core Fusion literally transformed my body. I am now toned and strong and feel more confident and comfortable in my own skin. Needless to say, I was excited about this new DVD because it is marketed as being like a live class. Even more exciting is that in the DVD with Fred and Elisabeth are three of my favorite Core Fusion teachers! So if you get this DVD, you’ll be watching the teachers whose classes I take the most.

So what did I think of Core Fusion Lean & Toned?

I liked it! I think that for someone who doesn’t have access to live classes or can’t afford/doesn’t want to pay for them, this DVD will definitely give you a good feel of what class is like. That said, Lean & Toned is not exactly like a live class as I thought it would be. It was like a compressed version of class – as if someone held a full-length class at both ends and squeezed it in.

Lean & Toned goes something like this:

Warm up (leg/arm lifts)
Pushups
Reverse Pushups (tricep dips)
Forearm Plank
Weights (for biceps, triceps, shoulders, back)
Thighs (ouch)
Abs (flat back/round back against a wall)
Glutes
Abs (pretzel/curl combo)
Stretch

That is a lot to pack in 50 minutes! The movements are fairly nonstop so it does work up a sweat, although the stretching in between creates a nice feeling of balance. That said, some parts did feel rushed, like the plank and arm weights sections, which were much shorter than I expected. I also never saw the pretzel move interspersed with the abs curl position, as was done here. I was confused by the pretzel (imagine sitting with one leg bent in front of you and one straight or bent to the side) being here at all since there was already a glutes section, and this pretzel was intended more for abs. Just something I haven’t seen done in class. One final difference is that in class we do glutes right after thighs. In the DVD some ab work falls in between those sections, although a little birdie told me that was a production error.

All in all, this is an excellent workout DVD and you will get the idea of a Core Fusion class. If you decide to order the DVD, you will need to own a set of light weights. I’ve been doing Core Fusion for months and I use 3 pound weights. You also need a chair to hold on to for the thighs segment, and a wall with space to lean against for flat and round back abs.

While stretching after each exercise is crucial in Core Fusion, I do think this DVD had a tiny bit too much time devoted to it. But I love how Fred and Elisabeth explain the benefits of each movement; it really makes you understand why each exercise was chosen and what it will do for your body. Another great aspect of the DVD is the ability to do it all at once and work up a sweat, or pick and choose 10 minute segments if you are short on time.

All in all, a great DVD. I recommend!

A Prophet [Blu-ray]

“Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena, part Arab, part Corsican, cannot read or write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears y

In his labyrinthine portrait of a convict turned kingpin, Jacques Audiard (A Self Made Hero) combines the grittiness of HBO’s Oz with the shifting loyalties of a Leone western. After assaulting a cop, Malik (riveting newcomer Tahar Rahim) earns a six-year prison bid. Though illiterate, the 19-year-old speaks French and Arabic. Instead of congregating with the Muslim inmates, he keeps to himself, providing a perfect target for Mob boss César (Niels Arestrup of Audiard’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped), who makes him a Godfather-like offer he can’t refuse: kill Reyeb (Hichem Yacoubi), an Arab set to testify against the Corsicans, or meet his maker. Malik decides he would prefer to live (in a surrealistic touch, Reyeb’s ghost will haunt him for the rest of the film). In return, Luciani offers him protection but stops short of treating him like an equal. When Malik isn’t serving coffee and making deliveries, he studies French and Corsu. With what he learns from the mobsters, he befriends two other loners, Ryad (Adel Bencherif) and Jordi the Gypsy (Reda Kateb), and starts a drug-smuggling operation. The years pass, and Malik takes advantage of his parole leaves to work both sides of the fence, and when the authorities transfer César’s crew to a different facility, the balance of power shifts from the aging master to the model student. At 149 minutes, A Prophet feels more like a miniseries than a movie, but there are no dead spots, no wasted moments, resulting in Audiard’s most fully realized vision to date. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

If there is one thing I have appreciated about Jacques Audiard’s work, you know you’re in for a cinematic treat. I enjoyed his 1999 film “Venus Beauty Institute” (Vénus beauté institut), his 2001 film “Read My Lips” (Sur mes lèvres) and repeated his success with his 2005 film “The Beat That My Heart Skipped” (De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté) and in 2009, Audiard returned with “Un prophète” (A Prophet) which is based on the original screenplay by Abdel Raouf Dafri and Nicolas Peufaillit and rewritten by Audiard and Thomas Bidegain.

The film would receive critical praise and would go on to receive an Academy Award nomination in 2009, a winner of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix , won “Best Picture of the Year” at the London Film Festival and would join two films in the history of the César Awards by being nominated for 13 awards and the third film in French cinema history to win 9 or more César awards (the last two films was the 1980 film “The Last Metro” and the 1990 film “Cyrano de Bergerac”).

VIDEO:

“A Prophet” is presented in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1 aspect ratio). I’ve commented with nearly every Sony Blu-ray release of how these last two years have been fantastic in terms of overall presentation and quality. The picture quality for “A Prophet” is absolutely wonderful. You can see the detail of the grime around the prison, the weaves of fabric on the clothing, the scratches, cuts, wrinkles and skin pigmentation in HD and a color pallet that is full of detail and depending on the scene, great use of colors to showcase the cold prison life to the vibrant outdoor (and out of prison) scenes.

There is a fine layer of grain throughout the film and blacks are nice and deep. Overall, a magnificent presentation from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment with no signs of artifacting, edge enhancement or any other negative anomalies.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

“A Prophet” is presented in French and German 5.1 DTS-HD MA. Although the film is primarily dialogue driven and thus sound coming from the front and center channels, you do hear the prison ambiance through the surrounds. For example, when Malik is working at the sewing shop, you can hear the machines through the surrounds. And you also get good use of the surrounds during the more action driven sequences such as the shooting scenes or a person being kicked and beaten.

The film also utilizes music such as its primary score courtesy of Alexandre Desplat (”The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, “Lust Caution”, “The Valet”, etc.). Desplate does a wonderful job with the score in developing the overall somber mood of the film. Also, the film utilizes modern hip hop and rock tracks which is deep with bass and quite clear through the front channels.

Subtitles are presented in English, English SDH, French, German and Turkish.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“A Prophet” comes with the following special features (in standard definition, French stereo and with English and German subtitles):

* Commentary with Director Jacques Audiard, Actor Tahar Rahim and Co-Writer Thomas Bidegain – An audio commentary track which gives you really good insight of the film, working with the various cast members, the technical issues of filming in a prison and more.
* Deleted Scenes – (10:34) The film comes with four deleted scenes.
* Tahar Rahim & Adel Bencherif Rehearsal Footage – (1:05) Tahar Rahim (Malik) and Adel Bencherif (Sayad) rehearsing.
* Tahar Rahim & Gilles Cohen Rehearsal Footage #1 – (4:49) The first Tahar Rahim (Malik) and Gilles Cohen (Prof) rehearsal.
* Tahar Rahim & Gilles Cohen Rehearsal Footage #2 – (3:07) The second Tahar Rahim (Malik) and Gilles Cohen (Prof) rehearsal.
* Screen Tests – (5:00) Featuring five screen tests for Tahar Rahim (Malik).
* Theatrical Trailer – (2:02) The original theatrical trailer for “A Prophet”.
* BD-Live Enabled – Register your disc with Sony for their awards points or preview upcoming Sony Blu-ray releases.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“A Prophet” is a film that is a fantastic film that is well-written, well-directed and more than anything, both Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup do a wonderful job with their role. Perfectly time interaction and the film while long at 155 minutes, was well-written and helped develop the characters, especially Malik’s journey as the quiet prisoner to seeing him evolve into something quite different.

Needless to say, “A Prophet” is a survival film. Malik does all he can to survive within the next six years and that is by remaining close to the Corsican mafia (who treat him like a dog because he’s Arabic) while trying to keep his reputation cool among the Arabs. If anything, we learn first hand of how difficult it is for Malik as he must obey Luciani in order to survive the corrupted prison system but also making sure to maintain communication with other people in prison to ensure the success of his business and also helping those who are with him.

With that being said, the film does have its share of violent moments and for the faint-hearted, especially for those who don’t like seeing blood, this film does have a very bloody scene. One scene has Malik being trained by the Corsican mafia on how he is to kill Reyeb. In the scene, Malik is to pretend he is about to give Reyeb oral but with a blade hidden in his mouth, Malik has to slice the carotid artery on Reyeb’s neck. Let’s just say that things get bloody in this scene.Other scenes feature Malik being kicked in the ground, punched, nearly eye gouged.

But these scenes are necessary to show how a man can change in prison and it has a psychological toll on Malik as he begins to see the man he has killed in his room and begins to have a conversation with him. May it be guilt and this man haunts Malik’s inner conscience but the truth is, while in prison and with no one to trust but his one friend Ryad (played by Adel Bencherif), all Malik has is this ghost of Reyeb. Possibly to remind him of his innocence that was stripped away by the Corsican mafia. We see how this man go from this silent loner, we see him evolve to a new kind of man and everything plays out quite wonderfully at the end.

There have been a good number of well-created prison films in the past 50 years such as “Grand Illusion”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “Le Trou”, “Stalag 17, etc. With most dealing with prison escapees to police or someone disguising themselves as prisoners trying to obtain information from a criminal. And while survival in prison has been featured in a variety of films, “A Prophet” is probably the first film in which a writer and director has attempted (and in this case succeeding) in depicting one man’s survival while being in the most corrupted and dangerous place to be. Having to lean on those who want to use you, corrupt you and rob you of your innocence and thus changing you in the process.

This is one grueling journey for the protagonist and at 155-minutes, it’s definitely a film that requires one’s patience. As for its title, “A Prophet” comes from one of the crime bosses in which Malik has to meet (which Luciani has arranged with his people in the outside). Malik has a dream the night before about driving and seeing a lot of deer and a deer sign and sure enough, while in the car with the crime boss, he quickly remembers the deer by seeing the deer sign and warns the people in the car that they are about to get into an accident. The car manages to hit only one but Malik’s warning enables him to save the lives of the criminals, the crime boss asks Malik how he knew those deer were coming and if he is some kind of prophet.

The title has nothing to do with Malik having dreams that come true (with the exception of the deer incident) but more or less, a man who learns the hard way of survival from a top mafia boss and learns about the shady practices of well-connected criminals in the prison system and eventually utilizing the things he has learned and making the best out of it.

Although the film has received mostly positive reviews, there are some who challenge the film’s plot of Malik being able to leave the prison system for “leave days” which are given to low-incident criminals. With Luciani’s connection with the warden and the outside, Luciani depends on Malik handling some business for him while on his leave day.

Donald Levit of “ReelTalk Movie Reviews” writes, “Malik may have a plan or may wing it, but too many things fly too fast and furiously — a first, seconds-long airplane ride (nicely done); a mosque and imam, cached kilos and Egyptians; a highway deer-crossing sign and an outdoor beach restaurant lunch; an increasing Muslim prison population and transfers or releases for fifteen of the twenty Corsicans; a bafflingly complicated and carried out Mace attack and van rub out.”

Levit does have a point but I believe that is why the duration of the film was long. Director and writer Jacques Audiard and co-writer Thomas Bidegain wanted to show how powerful the Corsican mafia boss César Luciani truly is. We see this man having access to the best cell, television, food, clothing and even having access to a hidden cell phone. We know that the warden has been aiding Luciani and of course, whenever someone from the outside is meeting with him, he is literally conducting business and uses Malik and his weakness and fear in doing these jobs (which can easily get himself killed). But Luciani is well-connected and is able to make things happen for Malik in the outside world.

A lot of things do happen in the second half of the film and I can see where Donald Levit is coming from with his assessment of the scenarios. He also comments on the many players in the film. And yes, there are many players in the prison system that Malik has to interact with in the film. But in the end, all that matters is Malik’s business relationship with Luciani and his business relationship and friendship with Ryad.

As for the Blu-ray release, this is a solid release from Sony Pictures Classics. The picture quality is fantastic and although audio-wise, this is not a film that utilizes the surround channel in full-effect and is primarily dialogue-driven, you do get a good number of special features. The deleted scenes offers more insight to the film that can easily be added to the film and would make sense but in terms of pacing and duration time, at 155-minutes, I think by adding these scenes may be a bit overkill for viewers.

I suppose if I had to be nitpicky and what prevents this Blu-ray release from receiving a 5-star is that I was hoping to see some sort of featurette of the making of the film. Sony Pictures Classics definitely set the ladder high with their Blu-ray release of “The White Ribbon” with its number of awesome and lengthy special features. For “A Prophet”, the screen tests and rehearsals were fine but for a film of this caliber, it would have bee nice to see a featurette on the making of this film or clips from the César Awards where it the film would become the first in nearly three decades to win nine César awards (and nominated for 13). But again, that’s me being nitpicky.

Overall, “A Prophet” is a magnificent film and I hope it will encourage many cinema fans who are not familiar with Jacques Audiard’s films to go out and search his previous films. In the case of “A Prophet”, definitely compelling cinema that is thought-provoking, raw and violent but easily another well-crafted masterpiece from Jacques Audiard.

Highly recommended!
