A Bronx Tale

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn’t fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn’t have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is. –Tom Keogh

Fantastic!! I can’t believe this movie has been around this long and I never saw it. I’m so glad I own it so I can watch it many more times over the years. Oh yeah, and the ONLY place I found it was at Amazon.com. Thank you Amazon.com I know not to look any place else when I want to purchase a DVD, especially an oldie but goodie.

All About Anna

A co-production of Innocent Pictures and Zentropa Productions, All About Anna is a slice-of-life romantic comedy with explicit erotic scenes, starring Gry Bay, Mark Stevens and Eileen Daly and helmed by award-winning director Jessica Nilsson. It follows the Puzzy Power Manifesto developed by Zentropa in 1997, and is made by women, for women. Zentropa is Scandinavia s biggest film production company, a four-times Academy Award-nominee and winner of several major awards in the festivals in Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance and Toronto as well as being the most winning European production company under The European Film Academy. Zentropa is best know for the Dogme95-manifesto and counts such titles as Breaking the Waves , Dancer in the Dark , The Kingdom (the original mini-series), Dogville (starring Nicole Kidman) and After the Wedding among its over 100 feature and television productions. It was the world s first mainstream film studio to also produce hardcore adult pictures. All About Anna has been shown internationally in theatres and on film festivals. It received an AAAAA Editor s Choice review in the April 2008 issue of AVN Magazine, where it was one of only four films to receive the journal s highest rating. In September 2007 it was highlighted on the cover of Germany s biggest weekly Stern Magazine s cultural supplement as one of today s 50 Trends. It won three Scandinavian Adult Awards, including Best Scandinavian Couples Film, and was nominated for four AVN Awards, including Best Music Soundtrack and Best Foreign Feature.

My wife and I find the bang-bang of Internet porn sites more of a turn-off than a turn-on. We chose All About Anna based on its reviews, hoping it might add some sizzle to our otherwise humdrum bedroom activities. After watching it we discussed the plot and sex scenes a bit, and admitted to each other that the movie really wasn’t a turn-on either. But then we turned out the light. To our great surprise the bedroom activities of the rest of the evening kept us smiling slyly at each other for days. All About Anna was the catalyst we hoped it would be!

Mad About You: The Complete Fourth Season

Mad About You: The Complete Fourth Season

Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt return with Emmy-winning performances in the very pivotal fourth season of Mad About You.

While Paul (Reiser) has found a job as a full-time documentary filmmaker at the Explorer Channel, Jamie (Hunt) has opened a new PR firm with her longtime friend Fran (Leila Kenzle). It is a busy time in the Buchmans lives, and things are about to get crazier when they plan to start a family. Despite a series of frustrating false alarms, the couple are determined to do whatever it takes to conceive: including virtually nonstop sex and malodorous herbal remedies! The obstacles don t stop there as they face everything from Pauls sudden unemployment to their respective brushes with marital infidelity, and as the pressure on their marriage increases, their relationship begins to unravel.

Sophisticated, sharp and incisively funny, Season Four won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Guest stars include Yoko Ono, Laugh-Ins Arte Johnson and Hank Azaria. All 24 Season Four Episodes.

Always loved this show, one of the few back then that I used to actually make sure to watch when it was on.
But for me, the first through third seasons were the best, because in this season, they started getting way too contrived, with the baby and marriage problems, that it just lost some of the appeal, started feeling more like just another sitcom.

Up until this season, it was a smooth flowing, fun ride, and while i wouldn’t have minded a more serious bent to the last part of the fourth season, it was how they went about it that just rang so hollow. Out of the blue, suddenly the marriage is in danger, and the setup for the various things was just so planned, it took away the enjoyment. The show where they were trying to talk, and suddenly everyone was showing up at their door, for instance… They live up in the building, only way to get there is to go on the stairs or elevator, and there is no way the elevator could go up and down and bring up new people within 10 seconds, yet in one episode, their doorbell rings over and over, as if they all came up separately, but there is no possible way for that to have happened. And the whole last end of the season has that feel, things just thrown at the wall in hopes something would stick.

The beginning of the season is still good though, hence the reason I still gave it four stars. And even the bad shows still have moments of hilarity, but this was the beginning of the end, and it unfortunately mars the series.

Other than that, though, still glad this finally came out on DVD, as I have had seasons 1 through 3 forever it seems, and had wondered if it was ever going to come out. Worth getting, especially for the price here at Amazon.

But the happy ride that was enjoyed for the first three seasons begins the downward slide towards the end…

Our Family Wedding

Our Family Wedding

Can love really conquer all–including the biggest alpha dads in the universe? That’s what the adorable young couple in Our Family Wedding gets to find out. The couple, played winningly by Lance Gross (Marcus) and America Ferrera (Lucia), are so deeply in love that they never realized the possible backlash of their respective dads, Brad (the always-compelling Forrest Whitaker) and Miguel (standup comic Carlos Mencia). While similar, earlier films like Guess Who’s Coming Together played off black and white racial prejudices, Our Family Wedding tackles black and Latino prejudices, which make up the bulk of the plot and the dialogue (the film also takes on class differences; the African-American family is quite wealthy, while the Hispanic one is working class). Our Family Wedding is crisply directed by Rick Famuyiwa, at a mere 90 minutes, and he manages to pack a lot of Dad vs. Dad antagonism into the festivities, leavening the arch with some decent belly laughs (goats and Viagra definitely don’t mix). “They’ll love you,” says the smitten Marcus, “because I love you.” But if it were that easy, there wouldn’t be a movie, would there? Our Family Wedding brings in elements of Father of the Bride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Parents–even Grand Canyon–to explore the tensions of blending families that don’t necessarily want to be blended. The terrific cast, which also includes the gracious Regina King and Diana-Maria Riva, brings deft delivery and big hearts to this interracial love story. –A.T. Hurley

OUR FAMILY WEDDING

STARRING: Forrest Whitaker, America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, Lance Gross, Regina King, Diana-Maria Riva, Lupe Ontiveros, Anjelah N. Johnson, Charlie Murphy and Shannyn Sossamon

WRITTEN BY: Wayne Conley, Malcolm Spellman and Rick Famuyiwa

DIRECTED BY: Rick Famuyiwa

Rated: PG – 13
Genre: Comedy
Release Date: 12 March 2010
Review Date: 25 March 2010

Our Family Wedding was good, but it was barely good. As has been the case countless times in comedies and romantic comedies lately, it’s the film’s actors that save the film. Is it the writing or is it the directing and producing that is continuously falling short? It’s often tough to say, but regardless of the condition of the screenplay, it’s the producers, editors and directors who are the last ones to touch the project; I’m just saying.

Forrest Whitaker, as is probably to be expected, out-acts everyone in the film. He is just brilliant, and can steal any scene from any actor bold enough to share it with him. Here, he plays Brad, the father of Marcus (Lance Gross).

Marcus is happily engaged to Lucia (America Ferrera) and the two are madly in love. There’s just one little problem; neither of them have told their parents. To make matters worse, they are both worried that the fact that
Marcus is black and Lucia is Hispanic, may play a part in causing an issue between their folks. Oh, and they are leaving the country, and have been secretly living together as well, which is a big no-no in Lucia’s family.

Carlos Mencia plays Lucia’s somewhat obsessive father, Miguel. If you know anything about Mencia, you will be blown away by him in this film. He really is a talented actor. However, I could not help but feel this part should have gone to George Lopez. Lopez is a master at this kind of comedy, and I felt that Mencia was being held back in the film, comedic-ally. He’s got a dirty mouth, and not to type-cast him, but I’d rather see him in a film where he could use it frivolously.

There is a pretty funny scene early on in which the two dads meet each other, not knowing that their children are dating one another. Miguel owns his own towing company and Brad is a successful DJ. Living in California, the filmmakers clearly wanted them to be very good at their jobs, because they both have a ton of money, based on their extravagant homes and accessories. It’s a stretch, but – okay, whatever. Miguel ends up towing Brad’s nice car and the two get into a juvenile racial spat in the middle of the street.

Later that night, we meet the rest of the family and discover that Brad has a thing for younger women, as his date (Shannyn Sossamon), is about the same age as his son’s fiancé. Of course everyone is already sitting at the table and has been introduced to one another, by the time the two unsuspecting fathers join them and realize their unwanted debacle. More racial tension and some pretty descent laughs ensue.

Perhaps my favorite element the film had to offer was a side relationship that brews between Brad and his longtime best friend and lawyer, Angela, played by the amazing Regina King. Regina King, is long overdue a starring role. Do you hear that Tyler Perry? Sign her up!

Marcus’s mother has been out of the picture for years, and Brad and Anglea are a very flirtatious couple of friends. We know right off the bat that they are into each other and that inevitably they will end up together. What I loved, is that the film doesn’t painfully drag it out through a series of mindless tid-bitts, only to have them end up together in the last five minutes, for the sole purpose of an, “ohhhhh” moment. They get intimate somewhere in the middle, and this was a nice refreshing turn. King and Whitaker’s chemistry together was extraordinary.

There are several good laughs to be found in the film, but there are plenty of missed opportunities as well. The one thing I definitely would have changed was the goat showing up to ruin the ending. Well, that was okay, but did it really have to eat Brad’s Viagra and dry-hump Forrest Whitaker? Where did this come from? It was funny, but belonged in a Ben Stiller movie.

Pirates of Penzance (1983) (Ws Sub Dol)

Pirates of Penzance (1983) (Ws Sub Dol)

When New York theatrical producer Joseph Papp decided to bring Gilbert and Sullivan to Broadway, he added typically broad, bold strokes to make their singular operetta format meaningful to 1980s audiences. In The Pirates of Penzance, Papp had a story that offered a mixture of potential action and comedy that was less arcane than other G&S chestnuts, which Papp’s production underlined by playing up its antic conflict between its hapless, titular pirates and the citizens of Penzance, the Cornish town targeted for plunder. Adding to the new production’s mainstream allure was the theatrical debut for erstwhile country-rock siren Linda Ronstadt as the virginal Mabel, along with a plum role for another putative pop heartthrob, Rex Smith, as the “good” pirate, Frederic.

Naturally, such amendments piqued complaints from self-appointed G&S purists, for whom the duo’s original satirical edge and theatrical innovation were obscured (if not ossified) by their canon’s patina of respectability. Happily, for the rest of us, Papp’s cheeky revisions are generally on the money, and this 1983 film version preserves them with unusual fidelity. Instead of opening up his production with location shooting or intricate editing, director Wilford Leach savors the artifice of its stage sets and hokey, colorful costuming, celebrating the genre’s proud theatrical legacy.

The cast, meanwhile, tears into the farcical plot with elan, led by Kevin Kline as the Pirate King, a role perfect for his skill at lampooning masculine bravado (not to mention his underexposed, generally strong singing). Broadway veteran George Rose proves the very model of the modern Major-General Stanley, and Angela Lansbury, added to the film’s cast for marquee value, again shows her mettle as the ditzy maid, Ruth. Ronstadt justifies Papp’s gamble, having trained rigorously to meet Sullivan’s acrobatic melodies–indeed, this project marked her commitment to grow beyond rock, confirmed with her subsequent exploration of classic pop with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle. –Sam Sutherland

…for the past 4-5 years if I’ve ever wanted to watch this i’d have to huddle over my laptop and watch a dodgy VHS-rip of my own creation, since our house hasn’t had a VHS player in the past what 13 years?
So it’s about time Pirates is available on an official DVD. Hooray!
Everyone get it for your kids, my grand-dad made us watch it when we were like 6 or something and we’d watch it every christmas after that. Now that I have a neice, we can share it with her too.

Hooray for Pirates Of Penzance!

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

move over, ken burns.

this film has it all … engrossing content and brilliant delivery. even the soundtrack. mesmerizing.

it enlightens us with a powerful overview of modern architects and their architecture, in los angeles and elsewhere, frozen in time and unified through the collaborative efforts of a creative and devoted photographer … who apparently was a real character in his own right.

this is his story. and the history of modern architecture. both well told by the filmmaker and all involved … clients, colleagues, family, friends, and fans. including my former architecture history professor at ucla during the post-modern rage.

i rented this dvd from netflix. i will now buy the dvd AND the soundtrack cd to enjoy at will and share with others. yes, it’s that good.

I’ve seen several concerts on DVD and on TV, but I think Celine’s Taking Chances Tour is the best. She sings all of her best songs here, and sings the hell out of them. And she has a lot of fun, which translates to the audience having a lot of fun.
Also, there are many unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) funny moments with Celine’s sometimes hilarious facial expressions, dance moves, thrusts, and chest thumps. A must see for Celine fans!

What is Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga?

Whether you’re a yoga veteran in search of an active yoga routine, or you’re new to yoga, Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga gives you all the tools to make your pregnancy journey the best it can be. Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga is your support system leading to a more comfortable pregnancy, quicker and less painful labor, and a speedier postpartum recovery.

Jennifer Wolfe developed Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga during her own pregnancy when she realized that all styles of prenatal yoga offered, at the time, could not adequately prepare her physically and mentally for labor. She wanted a yoga practice that specifically served the needs of the pregnant woman: one that actively prepares women for the marathon event of childbirth, while helping women discover their power and inner strength needed during this transformative period in their lives.

Jennifer Wolfe found these empowering and strengthening qualities in the soft flow of Vinyasa Yoga. In her DVDs, she adapts Vinyasa Yoga for the unique needs of pregnant women, providing a system that works with your body without sacrificing the intensity necessary to prepare for childbirth. By learning to link your breath and movements in a constant flow, you’ll increase your ability to work with your body during labor and childbirth, reducing the need for medications or other interventions; including a decrease in the need for C-sections.

I was a runner before I got pregnant, but was unable to keep running at about 4 months. I had done yoga on and off through the years, so it was an easy adjustment to start. Now I’m only walking, doing this DVD and my weekly prenatal class, and I’ve never been in better shape! Jennifer Wolfe will kick you in preggo gear if you stay consistent! I wish the music was better, but it doesn’t really matter. Also, she doesn’t do kegels, so I add that to the end of my workout. I love it!

Doctor Who: Underworld (Story 96)

Doctor Who: Underworld (Story 96)

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, the Time Lords of Gallifrey began exploring space and time with their new TARDIS technology. The first alien race they encountered were the Minyans, who treated the Time Lords as gods. In return, the Time Lords gave medical and scientific aid. As the Minyans became more advanced, they renounced their former gods. The war that followed destroyed the planet Minyos and set the Time Lords on the path of non-interference with the affairs of the universe. Before Minyos was totally destroyed, a single ship – the P7E – escaped. It carried the future of the Minyan species, locked into its onboard race banks. But the P7E disappeared into deep space centuries ago. Now the last of theMinyans have embarked on a quest to recover their lost race banks. Their quest is destined to bring the Minyans once again into contact with the Time Lords – one Time Lord in particular.

The Doctor Who adventure “Underworld” finds Tom Baker’s incarnation of the Doctor, accompanied by Leela (Louise Jameson) and faithful robot dog K9, materializing on a Minyan spaceship, one of two surviving vessels from a world destroyed 100,000 years before. The crew is on a quest to find the lost gene banks of their race, which were placed on a second ship around which a young planet has since formed. In a similar scenario to the previous season’s “The Face of Evil,” the descendants of the crew of this second ship have degenerated into superstitious primitivism ruled by a malfunctioning computer and, as in so many Doctor Who adventures, including the immediately proceeding “The Sun Makers” (1977), they are dominated by a brutal, self-serving elite.

The story is one of revolution in a series of underground tunnels, which are achieved with less than convincing “blue screen” process work, while the costumes and action clearly influenced by both Logan’s Run (1976) and Star Wars (1977). The latter was in the theaters as “Underworld” aired and its influence resulted in the introduction of post-production SFX work to produce the quite impressive ray-gun effects seen here. A fairly standard late-1970s addition to the show, “Underworld” is nevertheless an exciting and fast-moving action melodrama. –Gary S. Dalkin

The Doctor and his latest traveling compaion Leela find themselves on a ship built by the Minyans a race visted upon by the Time Lords long ago. The Minyans proclaimed them gods and were given such advancements that they destoyed one another. Save for two ships the P7e which held the race banks of the minyan people to start over again and the second sent to find the lost P7E. The Doctor and Leela help those searhing for the ship only to find themselves at the very edge of the universe where planets are made. A strange dicovery that the P7E has become the core of a new found planet and inside the ship’s computer has placed itself as a god. Now the Doctor with the minyans has to stop the evil computer calling itself the Oracle from keeping the desendants of the P7E in ignorance and a grip of evil.
