Based upon T.H. White’s beloved novel, this Disney-fied version chronicles the tutoring of the Once and Future King, Arthur, as handled by the magician Merlin. Sword was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upbraiding storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. But there’s much to enjoy here as Merlin shows Newt, the young Arthur, things that will help him become the ruler of the Britons. The transformation sequences, where the boy is turned into a fish, a bird, and a squirrel are vintage Disney. The oft-repeated scene of Merlin battling it out with the mean old Madame Mim still is worth a few chuckles, but it belies the problem with most of the film–the scenes are only there for the chuckles. References by Merlin to television and other items of modern life also mar the generally innocuous landscape. Children will like it, but they won’t cherish it. –Keith Simanton

“The Sword in the Stone” is a nice little Disney picture. Animated and only 79 minutes long, it is … just right … for those of us whose attention spans are easily challenged.

This movie is adapted from a book of the same title (written by T.H. White). Mr. White’s book follows the early life of a famous British folklore hero, King Arthur (a legendary monarch of the 6th century). Bill Peet, the Disney story writer who wrote the adaptation, took the book and picked this, chose that, and changed this a little, and, in the end, did an outstanding job of producing a screen play that is funny and enjoyable.

According to the story, a sword is magically thrust deep into an anvil that sits on top of a large stone. It is decreed (on the sword itself) that who-so-ever is able to remove the sword from the stone shall be anointed king of England. Many men try … but they all fail. Then, after a long time has passed, a youth named Arthur appears on the scene and, miraculously, he pulls the sword from the stone … and then is made ruler over all of England.

The story also includes another legendary character … Merlin the magician. Merlin is wise, powerful … and dotty. He foresees the arrival of the twelve year old Arthur and he feels that it is fore-ordained for him, Merlin, to be the boy’s teacher/mentor/companion to guide the lad toward some mysterious destiny.

Merlin, Arthur, and Merlin’s pet owl Archimedes (who can talk) then embark on three magical adventures … afterwhich the movie moves swiftly to the dramatic moment of Arthur and the sword.

The writing for “The Sword in the Stone” is good. No trouble is too serious or too scary and the trouble scenes are never drawn out. The bad guys (and bad creatures) are never allowed to win too much and our heroes are never allowed to lose too much. The importance of education is emphasized, but not over-emphasized. The story moves along at a comfortable pace, and all the scenes are believable … in-as-much-as the behavior and reactions of the characters are plausible and credible. And there is a delicate charm and some depth of goodness in there too. Incidentally, Merlin is given some pretty good lines to speak, and the squirrel scene is delightful.

The voice characterizations in “The Sword in the Stone” are very good. Karl Swenson provides the voice of Merlin, and he is wonderful. Junius Matthews does the voice for Archimedes the owl, and he is superb also. But the portrayals of the bad guys (often considered plum roles by actors and actresses; ones that they relish playing) in “The Sword in the Stone” are also done exceptionally well and they add a great deal of strength to the movie. Sebastian Cabot provides the voice for Arthur’s boisterous and self-important master Sir Ector … and this would be the refined, articulate, and dignified Sebastian Cabot … and he is very convincing as the crass and uncouth Ector. Norman Alden uses his voice talents to portray Sir Ector’s son Kay, and he also does an excellent job. Kay is an ill-mannered oaf, but after watching “The Sword in the Stone” a few times you begin to appreciate the good job Alden does … with a minimum of lines … in making this crude and rude character come to life. Martha Wentworth does the voice of the evil Madame Mim … and she is a real treat. Madame Mim absolutely delights in the macabre, and Wentworth seems to have absolutely delighted in playing her.

All in all, “The Sword in the Stone” gives us some pretty good entertainment and is deserving of repeated viewings.

Rat who aspires to cook teams up with a hapless garbage boy.

One key point: if you can get over the natural gag reflex of seeing hundreds of rodents swarming over a restaurant kitchen, you will be free to enjoy the glory of Ratatouille, a delectable Pixar hit. Our hero is Remy, a French rat (voiced by Patton Oswalt) with a cultivated palate, who rises from his humble beginnings to become head chef at a Paris restaurant. How this happens is the stuff of Pixar magic, that ineffable blend of headlong comedy, seamless technology, and wonder (in the latter department, this movie’s views of nighttime Paris are on a par with French cinema at its most lyrical). Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) doesn’t quite keep all his spinning plates in the air, but the gags are great and the animation amazingly expressive–Remy’s shrugs and nods are nimbler than many flesh-and-blood actors can manage. Refreshingly, the movie’s characters aren’t celebrity-reliant, with the most recognizable voice coming from Peter O’Toole’s snide food critic. (This fellow provides the film’s sole sour note–an oddly pointed slap at critics, those craven souls who have done nothing but rave about Pixar’s movies over the years.) Brad Bird’s style is more quick-hit and less resonant than the approach of Pixar honcho John Lasseter, but it’s hard to complain about a movie that cooks up such bountiful pleasure. –Robert Horton

The greatest part of getting older is becoming a grandma! If this hadn’t happened I never would have gotten to watch the Pixar movies and what could be better than watching them with a kid you love?
IMHO, “Ratatouille” is just another Pixar masterpiece. I would buy one without seeing any previews or knowing anything about the movie. That’s just how much I have enjoyed everything they have created.

Rokuro Okajima is meek, mundane and metropolitan. His business trip to South East Asia turns from pleasure cruise to festival of pain when modern day pirates board the ship and take him hostage. Revy, Dutch and Benny are merciless, maniacal and mean. Together, they make up the crew of the Black Lagoon. Making a living in a city where the most villainous of villains make themselves at home isn’t without its risks, but they take on any job available to them. Smuggling guns, drugs, kidnapped children and stolen goods is all part of a hard days work.

Although it lacks the nuance and subtlety of Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon more
than makes up for that with fast moving stories and almost non-stop action and
mayhem. Black Lagoon has all the elements that made Bebop so good but it is
darker in vision and definitely way more violent. The music is well done, it’s not
Yoko Kanno, but interesting enough for me to order the soundtrack, which is
available off Amazon for less than half the price here.* The packaging is weak.
Comes in a flimsy thin box. Using two discs for the bonus material is a waste
as neither is “loaded” with features. Lastly, there is humor and light moments
in this series to keep it balanced like Bebop and all the characters are interesting.
The Taiwan assassin “Chinglish” was a favorite and Sister Etta with her Rip Off
Church is an original twist. Nuns with guns. Revy is basically Faye from Bebop
on steriods but more in attitude and bloodlust than appearance. Animation of
characters and city is great. Background county scenes looks as may have been
farmed out to lesser studio. All around this series is a good buy and I am hoping
for more. *(buyer beware, my order took 3 weeks to arrive).

I bought this Immaculate Conception set. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. Rarely have I so enjoyed watching DVDs that I have bought. It was a great chance to re-experience this original, funny series, and see all the shows in succession and watch how the characters were fleshed out and became even funnier as the years passed. Every actor in this series is an accomplished and apparently highly respected actor. I guess that’s why it was such a successful series. And Dawn French is one of a kind. There were tidbits of comments by the director and creator and others, but I would’ve liked more of that. The bios of the actors were very interesting…I had no idea of the histories of some of the actors (since they’re British). I thoroughly enjoyed every DVD in this set. But I think this series was on for more years than are in this set? If so, I wonder if they are going to sell the remaining shows in a DVD set? Or is this complete? Reason I ask is that there is a 10th Year Anniversary DVD, but there aren’t 10 series in this set. Only three. ??? I highly recommend this set for those who love this series.

Chazz Palminteri wrote the script for this excellent story of an Italian American boy (Lillo Brancato) who grows up in the 1960s caught between the strong influences of his blue-collar, straight- arrow father (Robert De Niro) and a Mafia chieftain (Palminteri) who is his all-purpose mentor. De Niro makes his directorial debut with this production and, except for a little stiffness, does very well by the characters and their world. The story does not go precisely where one might expect it to go: Palminteri knows better than to force the central figure to choose between the two most important men in his life, and he doesn’t fill time with stock drama about crime or family conflict. Joe Pesci makes an extremely effective and uncredited appearance at the end as a man who doesn’t have to do more than speak softly to communicate how dangerous he is. –Tom Keogh

Fantastic!! I can’t believe this movie has been around this long and I never saw it. I’m so glad I own it so I can watch it many more times over the years. Oh yeah, and the ONLY place I found it was at Amazon.com. Thank you Amazon.com I know not to look any place else when I want to purchase a DVD, especially an oldie but goodie.

The venerable Superman mythos gets a 21st-century updating in this imaginative and engaging television series from the WB Network, and series fans can celebrate the ratings success of Smallville with a six-disc set that compiles its entire first season. The deluxe package offers a chance to revisit the origins of the characters and their numerous plotlines, as well as view deleted scenes and other bonus features.

The premise of Smallville–Superman as a teenager–takes up just a few pages in Superman’s very first comic book appearance (in Action Comics back in 1938), but series producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar flesh out that period by portraying young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) not as the noble Superman-in-waiting, but as an average teen with some not-so-ordinary supernatural powers, including incredible strength and heat vision (Clark hasn’t lifted up, up, and away as of yet). Clark’s desire to fit in with his peers and make sense of his extraordinary abilities ground him in very realistic and identifiable terms for the series’ primarily under-25 audience, as does his appealing and tentative romance with Kristen Kreuk as Clark’s dreamgirl Lana Lang. But Smallville also strikes gold when it takes a turn towards more comic book territory, as evidenced by the parade of shape-shifting killers and other outlandish antagonists (many generated, in one of the series’ most ingenious notions, by the same devastating meteor shower that brought the infant Clark to Earth) that Clark must harness his powers to face and defeat. Gough and Millar, along with their capable cast (which includes Michael Rosenbaum as a young and already bald-pated Lex Luthor, and Annette O’Toole and John Schneider as the Kents) manage to pull off the precarious high-wire act of combining science fiction with coming-of-age drama to create this highly watchable program.

Smallville: The Complete First Season offers a very complete and attractive DVD package that is rounded out by some highly desirable extras for longtime series fans. The six-disc set offers all 21 episodes of the first season, including the pilot, in widescreen anamorphic format; Gough and Millar are featured on the set’s sole commentary track, which appears on the pilot episode. Viewers can also access a number of deleted scenes from various episodes as well as view original pre-production storyboards and WB promotional spots. An interactive “tour” of Smallville rounds out the extras, but DVD-ROM owners can use the discs to access more features via the Smallville web site. –Paul Gaita

I am finally seeing what the fuss was about. This is an interesting take on the whole Superman legacy, with Tom Welling playing the young Clark Kent as a teen in a little town in Kansas, but in modern times. He has abilities that his adoptive parents want to hide, he yearns for a lovely girl named Lana, and at this time he is great friends with the conflicted Lex Luthor, a billionaire’s son who is torn between what his father wants for him and what he wants to do on his own.

John Schneider also does a nice job as Jonathan Kent, while the other cast members, pretty much unknown before this series, are solid. It’s interesting to watch Clark hone his skills in his slow rise to Superman, while we all know that one day, Lex will give in to the dark side and become his enemy.

These are the 45 minute episodes with Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog! These episodes are BEFORE the Wondertwins and the League of Doom. Not a whole lot of action…but a lot of good lessons about the environment, pollution, overpopulation…and Ted Knight is an awesome narrator. You only get 8 episodes on 2 dvds. My understanding is that if this dvd is successful, they’ll release the second volume.

One more thing, the manufacturers have completely misrepresented which series this is by not putting the Jr. Superfriends (Wendy etc) on the dvd cover. I have been searching for these episodes for years..if I hadn’t read the reviews here at Amazon (and had just relied on the dvd cover), I would have never realized that these were the episodes I’ve been looking for!
